Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Hoosier Abortion Fund?
The Hoosier Abortion Fund exists to help people in Indiana pay for expenses related to getting an abortion. We believe that every person should be able to make the decisions that are right for them, and to access abortion care safely and with dignity. No one should go broke trying to take care of themselves and their family. If you need an abortion and can’t pay for the procedure, we can help.
Is abortion legal in Indiana?
Yes. Indiana’s near-total abortion ban has been blocked in court. Abortion will remain legal in Indiana until at least January 19, 2023. We know the uncertainty about abortion access right now is so hard, and we’re here to help people find care and support. If you’re in Indiana and need help getting an abortion, text or call the Hoosier Abortion Fund at 812-727-4423. Visit AbortionFinder.org for the most up-to-date info on where you can get a legal abortion.
Can All-Options’ Hoosier Abortion Fund help pay for my abortion procedure?
Yes! If you are an Indiana resident, we can help cover the costs of an abortion here or in another state.
Can Hoosier Abortion Fund help cover other costs related to my abortion?
At this time we are not funding travel or other costs, but we can sometimes make a larger pledge toward your abortion care if you need to save money for something else. We can also connect you to practical support organizations that can help arrange and cover expenses for transportation to and from your abortion, childcare, lodging, and other travel costs.
How long should I expect to be traveling to get an abortion? How much time off do I need?
This depends on many factors, including the type of abortion you are having, where you are going for your appointment, and what laws are in effect in the state where your provider is located. In some cases you may only need one visit at a clinic (usually for at least a few hours), and in some cases you may need to go two or more times over a few days. You will also need to factor in time for traveling to and from the clinic, and time to take care of yourself and recover. If you have an appointment, ask your provider what to expect. You can also find more information at AbortionFinder.org.
What if I’m a minor? How do I get a Judicial Bypass?
If you are under 18 years old, you will need to get consent of one parent or guardian, or get a judicial bypass, in order to get an abortion in Indiana. Visit the Indiana Judicial Bypass Project for more information. You can also leave the state to access abortion care; for example, Illinois has no parental involvement laws, which means that young people can have an abortion without involving a parent in the decision. The Repro Legal Helpline also has information and resources for people under 18 seeking abortion care.
What types of abortion care are available?
- Abortionfinder.org has a lot of information on types of abortion.
- Abortion: Which Method Is Right For Me?: Provides information and exercises for people choosing between medication and aspiration or in-clinic abortion.
What about self-managed abortion?
Self-managed abortion refers to people accessing abortion pills outside of the formal medical system. Research has found that people who self-manage abortion using pills with accurate information are able to do so safely and effectively. While self-managed abortion is medically very safe, there may be legal risks. Indiana’s abortion ban does not impose penalties on the pregnant person. However, people have been interrogated, arrested, and prosecuted by law enforcement for ending their own pregnancy or helping someone else end a pregnancy. Abortion On Our Own Terms and If/When/How’s Repro Legal Helpline are good resources for anyone looking for more information about or legal support for self-managed abortion.
